Zagreb, June 20, 2023
On May 18, 2023, we participated in a two-day conference "Freedom of speech & hate speech in the 21st century", organized in the Tree of Knowledge in the Student Center by Meritokrat, a student association from the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb.
By involving lecturers from different backgrounds, the aim was to inform students in a comprehensive way what freedom of speech is and how it is limited, i.e. by which national and European regulations is regulated. One of the goals was to explain hate speech more closely, the easiest ways to recognize it and how European and national bodies dealing with the protection of human rights work. In addition, the development of freedom of the press and media throughout history has been presented and the concept of socially responsible journalism and media reporting has been addressed.
Having in mind that we are trying to address hate speech and put it in the context of socio-political circumstances, i.e. to point out the harmfulness and consequences of public appearances that include hate speech, we held a presentation where we presented to the participants the results of our research War nineties from the perspective of Young People in Croatia which was published last year.
After the presentation, the participants filled out postcards we created as a part of the campaign on critical reflection on patriotism with their own definitions.
